Daisy Chain Says
“John D Wood are a family-friendly company that embrace flexible working.”
Polly Ogden Duffy's Experience
I'm the managing Director of John D Wood & Co. and have two young children, aged 1 and 3. I have always been career driven, but have equally never been prepared to compromise on having a family. I know from personal experience it's possible to work flexibly and deliver the same or better result. I encourage my teams to consider flexible working if it suits them and we will generally try to support our employees where possible to work around them.
1. What were, or are, the biggest challenges you faced going back into the work place having had children?
Childcare! Great childcare is worth its weight in gold. Once I found the right arrangement I didn't worry for a moment. But as a first time mum, this was a terrifying thought. I found my childcare provider by the time I was 5 months pregnant - I like to be organised!
2. How did your career change after having children?
I have progressed in my career since having children, as I have found a great balance. I work flexibly when required and as I love what I do it's easy. I also have a better understanding of what challenges my employees may have being able to understand their family commitments.
3. How do you balance your career with your family?
I work full time but on a flexible arrangement. The weekends are very important to me with the family and I value that time immensely. I tend to wake earlier these days and am in the office often before my children wake up, but it means I can be home to see them in the evenings.
4. How has working for Vanet enhanced your family/ work life balance?
I work for, and with great people. We are a grown up, forward thinking business and consider ourselves a family. It's really important that we all have a work life balance as I personally believe happy people produce better results.
5. If you could give your ‘pre-children’ self, one piece of advice about being a working mother, what would it be?
Find a company that believes in supporting their workforce and cares about their employees. Look at how your colleagues are treated and if your firm supports women (and families) on their return to work then sounds like you are onto a winner. Being a working mum is the hardest thing you will ever do but it's also the most rewarding. You will be setting a great example to your children.
6. What is it about this industry that appeals to you?
I love property and people. Most people in property tend to be quite personable, and therefore you will meet some wonderful people along the way. They will also tell you that they love to be a little nosy and see inside lots of different properties and generally our clients are very happy to show you around. I get to meet lots of different people every day, see wonderful homes and the buzz of a moving someone into their dream home is a lovely feeling.
